Aside from the numerous benefits to the planet, being kind to the environment can be kind to your wallet. There are various financial benefits to be gained by going green. For example, some utility companies will give you a discount when you install certain energy efficient appliances. Check with your local utility company to see how you might benefit. Aside from the savings on your electric and water bills, you might be pleasantly surprised to find you can save even more just by saving the earth.

More than 525 United States Mayors have signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement in an effort to combat global warming and to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As of right now, there is mostly legislation and encouragement, but we may soon see more mandatory conservation efforts put into place. For example, Denver, Colorado would like to see insurance premiums based on the amount of miles one drives in an effort to reduce gas emissions on the road. The city is also seeking to implement a mandatory trash and recycling code that would help combat global warming.

Fort Collins, Colorado estimates it has reduced the amount of waste going to the landfills by 30% after they implemented a mandatory recycling ordinance regarding computers, cell phones, TVs, and other electrical items. It will be far more satisfying though, if we, as citizens do our part without being forced to. Some of the proposed ordinances offer incentives too, like priority parking for eco-friendly vehicles.

Many manufacturers offer rebates for purchasing environmentally-friendly items because they do tend to be more expensive at the outset. However, almost all such items save money in the long run simply because they use less energy.

Re-using items instead of buying new things can save a lot of money, just like recycling does. Just eliminate one little item, like sandwich bags and use re-usable containers instead and you’ll notice the savings. Once you start implementing this practice in every facet of your life, you’ll notice a huge difference. Reducing the amounts of everyday items you use can also go a long way toward protecting the environment and saving money. For example, if you use dryer sheets, try tearing them in half and you’ve just saved 50% on one item. The half sheet does the same job as the whole sheet in most cases.

The possibilities are really endless once you start looking for opportunities to save the environment. In addition, you’ll be saving money and using products that are better for you and your family.
