Global Warming: What Your Community Can Do

Many communities across the United States have implemented or are in the process of implementing programs to help combat global warming and save the environment.  Recycling has become more and more prevalent with new items being added to the list of recyclables all the time.  Where it was once newspapers and soda cans, now we recycle computers and cell phones, and new items are constantly being added to the list we can keep from tossing into the landfills.

Just something as simple as collecting magazines and delivering them to medical offices, nursing homes, and hospitals can make a huge difference in communities across the globe.  Not only are you helping to save the environment, but you are providing access to entertainment and education that might otherwise end up in the garbage.

We’re doing our part and we want our elected officials to also.  A letter writing campaign targeted toward those officials demanding legislation for cleaner cars and cleaner power plants is a great way to bring the community together on this issue.  More than 525 mayors across the United States have signed the

U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which pledges to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and enables the whole community to be a part of the fight to combat global warming.  If your city or town doesn’t yet have a plan of action, perhaps you could get one started.

Involve your kids, your family, relatives, and friends in the protection of our planet.  Have a get-together and exchange ideas about what you can do in your homes, schools, places of worship, and at work.  Although the statistics regarding the amount of energy just one family can save by implementing even small changes are astonishing, when the entire community comes together in the fight against global warming, the changes are truly amazing.

For example,

Denver, Colorado has a goal to reduce carbon dioxide emissions equal to removing 500,000 cars from the road by 2020.  They have spent months looking for ways to combat global warming and have involved the community as a whole.

There is much to be done and fortunately, many, many ways that we, as individuals, as a community, as a nation, and as a world can work to protect the environment from further harm, and in fact, reduce the harm that has already been done.  If your community already has a plan of action, consider becoming a part of it, and if it doesn’t, consider what you can do to get one started.
