Global Warming: Doing Your Part at Home
Going green has become a way of life for many energy-conscious citizens. It starts with recycling soda cans and newspapers, yet conserving energy and being proactive about global warming can literally touch every facet of your life. You’ll be amazed to discover how much energy one family or even one person can save just by implementing a few simple changes around the house.
For example, light bulbs may seem like such a small part of the whole global warming issue, yet if every American replaced just one incandescent light bulb with a compact fluorescent light bulb, it would save enough energy to light more than 2 million homes for an entire year! That is truly mind-boggling when you think about it. In fact, these energy-efficient light bulbs will not only save tons of energy, but they will save you tons of money because they last so much longer.
You’ve probably heard the phrase, “reduce, re-use, and recycle” many times. That’s because the impact of putting these simple solutions to use is huge in the fight against global warming. It’s not just the materials used to make the new product that we need to be concerned about, it’s also the vast amount of energy used from the manufacturing process all the way down to delivering the product to the end-user.
When you do need to replace items in your home, especially large items like appliances, look for the energy efficient appliances. You’ll save money on your electric bill and you’ll save the earth at the same time. For example, when you need to replace your clothes washer, by replacing it with an energy efficient model, you’ll money save on electricity and water and you’ll be protecting the environment at the same time. You can find a list of Energy Star qualified home products at energystar.gov. Here you’ll find products for the home and office in more than 50 categories. In order to qualify for the Energy Star, products must meet stringent energy-saving guidelines.
You can also go green outside by using a reel lawn mower or at least use a mulching mower if you absolutely have to use a power one. In so doing, you’ll reduce the amount of grass clippings that will eventually find their way to the landfill. Anytime you can avoid sending anything to the landfill, you are reducing the amount of methane gas emitted and that’s another big help in the fight against global warming.
There are hundreds of ways you can do your part to combat global warming at home. Getting started is the first and most important step and once you do, you’ll begin to be aware of more things you and your family can do.
