Global Warming: Doing Your Part at Work
You can do your part to combat global warming even when you are at work. In fact, examining the way you get to work each day would be a great first step in implementing your new “green” lifestyle on the job. Ask yourself if it is possible to carpool or switch to public transportation, even one day a week. What about bicycling? One of the best things you’ll learn as you live a greener lifestyle is that many of the things that are good for the environment are good for us also. For example, bicycling to work just one day a week will not only save energy and reduce the harmful emissions polluting our environment, but it is great exercise as well. Do you live close enough to walk? Think exercise and environment and you’re on your way to a great start.
There are a lot of other ways you can combat global warming at work as well. Here again, is a great opportunity to recycle. If your place of work doesn’t already have recycling bins, perhaps you could help to implement them, especially if there is a soft drink machine on the premises. Most everyone is happy to toss a can into a nearby receptacle and when it’s time to take the cans to the recycling center, you could donate the proceeds to charity in the name of your company.
There aren’t too many places of business that don’t use paper in one form or another. This is a huge source of waste that can be easily recycled. Here again, most employees would be willing to drop their recyclable paper into a handy box or bin and before long, it would just be the thing to do.
The type of office supplies and equipment that are initially purchased can have a huge effect on the fight against global warming in terms of energy conservation, recyclables, and reducing gas emissions. Installing energy efficient light bulbs in the office or workplace can have a huge impact as well as purchasing energy efficient equipment. Ink cartridges can be refilled and recycled, which saves money as well, and when it’s time to purchase a new computer, look for the energy efficient models that emit far less heat than many of the ones currently in use.
Many large companies have gotten on board and are diligent about the products they purchase and advocate recycling and cutting down on waste. If your place of business hasn’t yet implemented a program to proactively combat global warming, be the hero and start one today!
